Although it is important to know how to solve each way when solving systems of equations, sometimes, when you have the option, it is important to know which method is the correct or easiest one to use given the set up of the equations. Below are some suggestions as to when to solve by either graphing, substitution or elimination. However, it is important to remember, NO MATTER WHICH WAY YOU SOLVE YOU WILL STILL GET THE SAME ANSWER!!!
When do I use graphing to solve?
- When equations are in slope - intercept form (y = mx + b).
- When you are trying to determine the number of solutions an equation has.
When do I use SUBSTITUTION to solve?
- When you have one equation that is isolated.
- When you have one equation that is easily isolated.
When do I use ELIMINATION to solve?
- When you have both equations in standard form.
- When you have trouble with graphing equations or solving using substitution.
