The video below allows you to review how to solve by elimination. Make sure to pay attention to how to ELIMINATE a variable so you can eventually SUBSTITUTE a value back into an equation to solve.
Elimination Solving
In order to solve by elimination, it is sometimes easier to use the box set up. Creating a t-chart can make this easier. When looking at the image, see that each box tells you exactly where to put each value in order to solve the system of equations using elimination. Make sure both equations are in standard form, or Ax + By = C. It is then important to look for a pair of opposite variables so they can cancel out or ELIMINATE one another. If you cannot find an opposite set of variables, you can multiply one or both entire equations in order to create equations with opposite variables. Then you add the two equations together by combining like terms to isolate a variable. Once that is done, you plug the value for that variable back into one of the equations and simplify to get your answer.
